The Gym Slang Dictionary: A Pump Chaser's Field Guide
Walk into any gym and within thirty seconds someone is speaking a language you didn't sign up to learn. "Bro, that's a clean bulk." "Nah man, it's all genetics." You nod like you understand. You do not understand.
This is the Lab Journal's official decoder ring: a field guide to gym slang, translated by the underground chemists who spend more time bench-pressing vocabulary than plates. Print this out, tattoo it on your forearm, whatever it takes.
Why the Gym Runs on Its Own Dialect
Every subculture builds a wall out of words, and the weight room is no exception. Slang works like a secret handshake — say "swole" instead of "muscular" and the regulars know you've done more than watch fitness reels.
At Gymchemy we treat this dialect the way any lab treats its formulas: with reverence, a raised eyebrow, and zero attempt to explain ourselves to the uninitiated. Consider this dictionary your entry badge.
The Starter Pack: Pump, Gains, Swole
"Pump" is the temporary, glorious swelling of a muscle mid-set — gone by dinner, worshipped in the mirror anyway. "Gains" are the theoretical, long-term version of the same thing, measured in inches nobody actually measures.
"Swole" describes the state of having both, ideally under fluorescent gym lighting that makes everyone look 12% more shredded than they are. Use all three in one sentence and you've passed the entry exam.
"It's Genetics": The Most Suspicious Sentence in the Gym
No phrase gets deployed more confidently — or more suspiciously — than "it's genetics." It explains the back pump that arrived overnight, the vascularity that showed up out of nowhere, the sudden inability to fit into last month's sleeves.
We built an entire back print around this exact energy: too big to be casual about it, too committed to the bit to ever confirm or deny. Wear it and let people wonder.

Leg Day Vocabulary (Or: How to Skip It Politely)
"Chicken legs" is the diagnosis nobody asks for and everybody eventually earns. "Quad-dominant" is what you call your training split to disguise the fact that leg day happens roughly as often as a lunar eclipse.
DOMS — delayed onset muscle soreness — is the universal punishment for the one Tuesday a year you actually show up to squat. Wear it like a badge; walk down stairs like a newborn deer.
Bro Science and Spotter Etiquette
"Bro science" is the unofficial research department of every gym: theories passed down set to set, footnoted by nobody, disproven by everybody, repeated forever. "Spot me" is the closest thing lifters have to a wedding vow.
Master these two concepts and you'll survive ninety percent of gym small talk without ever discussing anything real. The other ten percent is just talking about the pump. See above.
Wear the Dictionary, Don't Just Speak It
Slang is temporary — it changes with every new gym meme cycle. A heavyweight tee with a painted alchemist print on the back doesn't; it just sits there being oversized and slightly ominous, doing the talking for you.
If "it's genetics" is your go-to line, the Toxic Lab Series was built to back it up visually before you even open your mouth.
